Step 4: Accountability

Declaring Your Intention

There’s something about sharing our goals with other people that makes them so much more powerful!

In his incredible book The Success Principles: How to Get from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be, Jack Canfield cites a study where participants were assigned to five different groups. They were then instructed to set goals and engage with these goals to varying degrees.

  • Group 1 simply thought about their goals.

  • Group 2 thought about their goals and wrote them down.

  • Group 3 thought about their goals, wrote them down, and came up with a list of action steps.

  • Group 4 thought about their goals, wrote them down, came up with a list of action steps, and shared that list with a friend.

  • Group 5 did all of these same things, plus they gave their friend a weekly progress report.

Did these groups see different results? You bet they did!

Members of Group 1 had a Success Rate of 43%. Groups 2 & 3 had Success Rates of 56%. But, by getting a friend involved, members of Group 4 boosted their Success Rate to 64% and those in Group 5 had a Success Rate of over 75%!

This is why accountability makes such a significant difference when it comes to achieving your goals!

Think back to your goal from step 1.

Who could you share it with who would support you in your efforts and hold you accountable for making progress?

I’m talking about the type of person who will ask you the really tough questions.

For example:

  • How have you been working toward your goal this week?

  • Are you doing something every day to get closer to your goal?

  • What’s your life going to look like when you reach your goal?

Questions like these challenge us to stay on track because we know someone’s cheerleading us toward our goal.

And, if we pick the right person, they’ll also give us a swift kick in the pants if we start to slack off.

It’s like when we’re working out. It’s a whole lot easier to get up and go to the gym in the morning if we know someone’s there waiting for us.

So, who do you need to give permission to hold you accountable for reaching your goal?
