Step 7: Expectation
Fueling Your Resolve
Some of you may be thinking, “All of that advice on changing my identity sounds great, but I’ve tried ‘living as if’ I was my future self before, and it didn’t work for me.”
I completely understand.
The truth is, we have a lot more experience being who we are today than we do being our future selves. So, it’s entirely possible you’ll face some psychological tension at this point.
However, unlike someone who simply wakes up one day and decides to change their life out of nowhere, you’ve set up a foundation for success by going through the previous steps and transforming your mindset:
-
You know what you want.
-
You know why you want it.
-
You’re committed.
-
You’re not alone.
-
You have an action plan.
-
Your goal is a reflection of your true identity.
Now it’s just a matter of fueling your resolve to bring your dream to life on a daily basis. This repetition will transfer your goal from your conscious mind to your subconscious so living in step with your goal becomes almost automatic.
Sound like magical thinking? It’s not. It’s actually basic neuroscience.
This is where affirmations, visualization, and gratitude come in.
I can already hear some of you yelling, “Not this new age crap again!” But stick with me here! There is literally mind-altering power to these exercises.
When you repeat affirmations that are in line with your goal, you reprogram your subconscious mind to work for you, instead of pulling you back into your comfort zone.
Combine these affirmations with a time of visualization (where you picture your life the way it’ll be when you achieve your goals and feel the feelings you’ll experience in that moment), and you can literally supercharge your sense of expectation!
Then you can boost the power of these activities even further by incorporating a daily gratitude practice. This could be as simple as making a list of five things you’re grateful for as soon as you wake up each morning.
For those of you who already have a regular prayer or meditation practice, try incorporating these exercises with those activities.
Anything that reinforces the anticipation of achieving your goal is great!
Remember, willpower alone hasn’t helped you achieve your goals in the past, so isn’t it time to try something new?
With that in mind, let’s frame up a daily affirmation around your goal from step 1:
My Affirmation:
I am so happy and grateful now that I’m enjoying
.
Be sure to state your affirmation as though it’s already happened.
For example: “I’m so happy and grateful now that I’m enjoying walking along the cobbled streets of Siena, Italy on my family vacation!”
After you read your affirmation, close your eyes and picture yourself being there in that moment.
Allow yourself to fully engage in this experience with all your senses. (Do this several times a day, if possible).
